She earned a Master of Science degree from Oberlin College, a Bachelor of Music degree from the Juilliard School (in composition), and a Master of Sacred Music degree from Union Theological Seminary. She married L. Harold Sanford in 1931 (they were married a total of 60 years) and together they began a duo-piano career, performing in the Northeast and in Florida for many years. She also was active as a voice coach and accompanist and church musician.
