NIELSEN, Mette
Mette Nielsen often works with what she calls "the almost uniform" or "the imperfectly uniform" - a state of friction that opens up a space where small differences become clearer and microtones and sounds become audible. She embraces both chance and control as coincident parameters. In a number of works, the musicians receive instructions via iPods set to the shuffle function: the musicians receive instructions with the composer's voice directly in their ears, while relinquishing a significant degree of control as the form of the work is randomly created through the iPod's shuffle- function.
Nielsen has studied at the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music and the Jutland Conservatory of Music with Simon Steen-Andersen, Jeppe Just Christensen, Niels Rosing-Schow, Hans Abrahamsen, Bent Sørensen and Hans Peter Stubbe-Teglbjærg. Mette Nielsen has received the Pelle Prize, the Axel Borup-Jørgensen Composer Prize, the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen Legacy, the Anckerske Legacy and a legacy from the Astrid and Aksel Agerby Memorial Fund. Her music has been performed by Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Adapter, Ensemble TM+, SCENATET, FIGURA Ensemble, Athelas Sinfonietta, Bulgarian Women's Choir Usmifka and others.
