KARSELIS, Joanna

Jo is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer-songwriter. She writes music for all medias and particularly enjoys finding unusual ways to manipulate and create sound, inspired by her background in contemporary classical acoustic and electroacoustic music. Her work draws on her varied classical background and encompasses traditional scoring alongside avant garde experimentation. Her immersive composition method regularly includes unusual approaches to sound and instrumentation alongside extensive research. She regularly self-performs to create unique and organic sounds. She collaborates closely with the directors she works with and has a particular passion for working with directors from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds and on novel, interesting, previously untold stories. She’s a full member of BAFTA. Jo has worked in features, shorts, web series and podcasts in many genres. The features that she has scored are available to stream via Amazon Prime. Highlights of her work to date include Reunification, a feature documentary which won awards at festivals worldwide, one woman feminist thriller The Bellwether, distributed by Giant Pictures and Cardinal XD, arthouse feature 5 South, and 51 States, a short dystopian scifi film for sarangi, electronics and strings. Her music has appeared on the BBC and her work has been mixed in major UK studios such as Warner Brother’s De Lane Lea. She works with major UK music library companies such as West One and BAM and her music has been used across the BBC. She is affiliated with COOL Music and We Are Golden. In February 2023 she won Best Original Score at White Deer Film Festival for silent short film Ghosted.
