DE CAMPOS, Lina Pires

Known in musical circles as the "Master of the Piano," pianist, composer, and music educator Lina Pires de Campos devoted her life to Brazilian music and culture, as evidenced by her body of work and legacy.

As a composer, she built a significant chamber repertoire written for various ensembles and instruments, including piano, guitar, clarinet, flute, and voice; most of these works have been published, recorded, and recognized with awards such as the Roquette Pinto Medal / Rádio MEC Competition (1961) and an Honorable Mention for Classical Guitar Music, Vitale /Funarte (1979). A disciple of Mozart Camargo Guarnieri, with whom she studied for 25 years, her musical output is marked by a nationalist style that brings European musical forms, such as waltzes and sonatas, together with themes and rhythms from Brazilian popular music, like the coco and the embolada, which recall dances such as the ponteio and the toada.

Her compositions reveal remarkable creativity, sensitivity, lyricism, and technical challenge. In piano pedagogy she was considered the "creator of pianists," training multiple generations of pianists through her own method of piano pedagogy, developed from the teachings of her masters—especially the pianist Magdalena Tagliaferro, whose assistant she was for 22 years— providing a solid foundation for many musicians who have gone on to stand out nationally and internationally.

To this day, Lina’s work is revisited as a subject of research and performed by students and professional musicians. Her name continues to be celebrated and honored at music-related events, particularly those focused on women in music and composition, in recognition of her dedication to, promotion of, and dissemination of national culture and music education in Brazil.
