CARCAS, Gillian

Gillian Carcas, now known as Gila Carcas, is an English composer, musician and teacher. Born in England in 1963, she holds a PhD in Composition from Durham University and has taught at several British institutions, including the University of Southampton and the Royal College of Music.
Her catalogue includes more than fifty compositions, ranging from solo and chamber works to orchestral, choral, vocal and electroacoustic music, as well as a chamber opera. Her works include The Ladies’ Defence, Boudica, Imaginary Moonwalk, Wembley Park Fanfare, Magma and Inside, Around, Everywhere. Her music frequently explores transformations of sound, relationships between tonality and atonality, instrumental timbre, and associations with particular places and landscapes.
Carcas moved to Israel in 2004, where she is known as Gila Carcas. Alongside composing, she has arranged numerous Jewish melodies for classical ensembles and teaches piano, violin, music theory and composition.
