WINGATE, Maud

Maud Wingate (1877-1958) was a British composer born in Hamilton, Scotland. She mostly composed under the male pseudonym Carlyon de Lyle. At a young age she moved to the Bristol area with her English mother after her father's early death. In some of her pieces she collaborated with her husband 'John Alleyne' (actually John Allen Bartlett (1861-1933)), whom she married in 1922, and who was also noted as an automatic writer at seances. She is an LRAM (holding a Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music) and her recording 'Dedication' was accepted by H.M. Queen Elizabeth in 1937. Works include 'The Ghost, Valse' (1923), and 'La Russie, sonata' for violin and piano.
