In the 19th century, Nathalie Wickerhauser was a recognised composer, listed in several contemporary encyclopedias with her compositions, such as Constant von Wurzbach's "Biographical Lexicon of the Austrian Empire" from 1887, Alfred Michaelis's "Women as Creative Musicians" from 1888, and Franz Pazdírek's "Universal Handbook of Music Literature of All Times and Peoples" (1904 ff.). A review of her composition "Scherzo pour Piano" (Op. 2) in the "Neue Zeitschrift für Musik" suggests—despite the scathing criticism of her compositional abilities—that Nathalie Wickerhauser was likely exceptionally well-trained at the piano.
