Johanna Wagenaar was born on January 13, 1900 in Utrecht. Her father, Johan Wagenaar (1862-1941), an organist inspired her to pursue music. She received her first musical training from him. She then studied piano with Lucy Veerman-Bekker at the Utrecht Toonkunst Music School in 1923. She continued her studies with Bruno Eisler in Berlin for several years. With Cornelis de Wolf – who was an organ teacher at the Hague Conservatory from 1932 – she studied organ for several years until his death in 1935. From 1928 until her retirement in 1965, Johanna Wagenaar taught at the conservatory in The Hague, initially harmony and counterpoint, from 1941 also piano.
