Ema Ortiz was born in the city of La Serena, on October 19, 1891. She studied piano with Professor Fabio Petris and then traveled to Berlin to continue his knowledge at the Stern Conservatory in that city.
In addition to being a composer, she was a singer and professor at the National Conservatory in Chile. Her work consists mainly of compositions for voice and piano; among them stands out the use of the texts of the poet Gabriela Mistral, among which her Cuna Songs are best known.
