VYNER, Mary Bainbridge

Mary Bainbridge Vyner was a concert pianist, composer, and teacher whose work significantly contributed to the growth of serious music in Southeast Pennsylvania. Born in Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, she was the wife of Dr. Louis Vyner, a renowned Curtis Institute of Music graduate and long-time music director of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Mary Bainbridge Vyner launched the Lancaster Conservatory of Music in 1958, an institution that taught many fine young musicians until its shuttering in 2020. The Vyner legacy in Lancaster continues today with a Concerto Competition at Millersville University. Her work, alongside her husband’s, helped establish Lancaster as a hub for classical music in the region, fostering both performance and education.
