VICKERS, Catherine

Catherine Vickers (born 1952 in Regina, Canada) is a Canadian pianist and Professor

Catherine Vickers initially studied in Edmonton. After attending masterclasses with Alfred Brendel, Jörg Demus, and Paul Badura-Skoda in Vienna in 1969, she continued her studies from 1971 onwards at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media with Bernhard Ebert and Hans Leygraf, supported by a scholarship from the Canada Council.In 1979, she won first prize at the International Busoni Piano Competition and was a prize winner at the Sydney International Piano Competition in 1981.

As a professor, she taught at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen from 1981 and subsequently at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts from 1998 to 2018, where she also served as dean from 2014. She also gave international masterclasses, for example at the Mozarteum Summer Academy in Salzburg, at the Varna Summer Festival in Varna, and at the Euro Festival Korea.

As a pianist, Vickers performed in Europe, North and South America, and Asia alongside her teaching activities. In addition to her classical repertoire, she is particularly committed to promoting contemporary music, including several world premieres, and regularly performs at international new music festivals.

She has served as a juror at numerous international piano and chamber music competitions, including the Busoni Competition and the Ettlingen International Piano Competition.

Catherine Vickers is married to the composer Nicolaus A. Huber. Her uncle was the opera singer Jon Vickers.
