VETH, Johanna Francina

Johanna Veth was a daughter of the Dordrecht ironmonger and liberal politician Gerrardus Huibert Veth and Anna Cornelia Giltay. On her mother's side she descended from the Van Strij family of painters from Dordrecht; her mother was a granddaughter of Jacob van Strij. She was sister of artist Jan Veth. She herself remained unmarried (obituary mentions Miss).

She received her basic training in Dordrecht from Wilhelmina Gips (singing) and Henri Vink (piano). For further studies she moved to Rotterdam where she was taught by Friedrich Gernsheim. These studies were continued in Amsterdam, where two famous teachers from the Conservatory of Amsterdam were again called in: Johannes Messchaert on vocals and Jean-Baptiste de Pauw on piano. Instead of a performing career, she turned to teaching singing in Amsterdam, from 1906 in Twello and from 1910 in Deventer, but still travelled back and forth to Amsterdam. She also led choirs in the Deventer and Apeldoorn area. As far as education was concerned, she was a supporter of the system of Louis de Sonnaville.
