VERBRUGGHE, Marguerite

Marguerite Verbrugge was a Belgian composer and teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent.

Marguerite Verbrugghe studied piano and composition at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent between approximately 1880 and 1890. In 1888 she won the first prize for music theory, and in 1890 she received the first prize for piano. In the same year she also won the first prize for harmonic writing and bass composition. A year later, in 1891, she won the second prize for chamber music.

From October 14, 1890, Marguerite led a preparatory piano course as a teacher. In 1900, the board of the conservatory made a proposal to the minister to officially appoint her as a teacher. On May 31, 1900, she married Joseph-Pierre-Octave-Ghislain Lefebure, who had also studied at the Ghent Conservatory and had won the prize for harmony composition in 1899.

Marguerite was appreciated by Ghent families for her teaching. On April 28, 1900, she organized musical auditions for her students in the art salon of the Beyerhuis, where the results of her teaching methods were presented.
