Nancy Van de Vate was an American-born Austrian composer and a prominent advocate for women in music. Best known for her large-scale orchestral and operatic works, her distinct, dissonant musical voice drew from diverse influences, including Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and traditional Indonesian music.A pioneer for female artists, she founded the International League of Women Composers in 1975 to champion underrepresented creators. Relocating to Vienna in 1985, she also co-founded the record label Vienna Modern Masters with her husband, Clyde Smith.
