URTIZBEREA, Teresa Atucha

Teresa Atucha (also known as Sor Amparo) was born in Irún in 1913. Like her six siblings, she began her musical studies within her family. She studied nursing at San Carlos in Madrid in 1933. She passed the competitive examination and obtained a position as a nurse at the Provincial Psychiatric Hospital of Guipúzcoa. She left to enter the convent as a novice with the Mercedarian Sisters of Charity in Zumárraga (Guipúzcoa) on September 20, 1940, and adopted the name Sister Amparo.

Her work focuses on occupational songs, some harmonized for treble voices and others for voice and piano. They are generally characterized by respect for tonality, gentle harmonies, often using chords on the sixth degree, and a certain fondness for suspensions in cadences.
