Mist Þorkelsdóttir studied piano and harpsichord at the Reykjavík School of Music. In 1982, she completed her BA from Hamline University, where she studied composition with Russell G. Harris. In 1983, she continued her composition studies with Lejaren Hiller and Morton Feldman at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
She later returned to Iceland, taught piano for several years and was actively involved in the work of organizations such as Musica Nova and Ung Nordisk Musik. In 1993, Mist completed her Master's degree (MM) from Boston University, where her main teachers were Theodor Antoniou and Lukas Foss.
Her trio work, Trinity , won second prize in a competition for young composers held by the Icelandic National Broadcasting Corporation in 1985. She has received commissions from individuals and institutions in Iceland, Sweden, and the United States.
Her repertoire includes well over forty compositions, including solo works, chamber works, choral works, and orchestral works.
Mist Þorkelsdóttir teaches composition at the Reykjavík School of Music and is actively involved in the social activities of Icelandic composers. She is currently the chairwoman of the Icelandic Composers' Association and also sits on the board of the Icelandic Composers' Association.
