TEICHMULLER, Anna

Anna Teichmüller (1861–1940) was a German composer and teacher known especially for her extensive output of art songs. Born in Göttingen, she studied music in Jena and Berlin before settling in the artists’ colony at Schreiberhau (now Szklarska Poręba, Poland), where she spent most of her creative life. She had a particularly close artistic association with writer Carl Hauptmann, setting many of his texts and becoming known as his Liederbraut (“bride of song”), but also composed settings of poetry by Rainer Maria Rilke, Paul Verlaine, Gottfried Keller, Nikolaus Lenau, Hans Bethge, and numerous others. Her substantial catalogue extends through at least Op. 43 and includes songs, chamber music, the Missa Poetica, and an opera. Notable chamber works include Forest Night, Op. 22, Hymn to the Night, Op. 23, and the Suite for violin and piano, Op. 41.
