TASHJIAN, Charmian

Charmian Tashjian is an American composer and educator whose works encompass instrumental and vocal chamber music, orchestral and choral compositions, and electronic media. Her music has received awards and commissions and has been performed in the United States and internationally by organizations including the Ravinia Festival, Chicago Chamber Musicians, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and Symphony II. Tashjian earned bachelor's and doctoral degrees from Northwestern University and a master's degree from Stanford University, studying music theory and composition. She has taught composition, theory, aural skills, music literature, and interdisciplinary humanities courses at numerous institutions, including Northwestern, DePaul, Columbia College Chicago, and Lake Forest College. She was also a founding board member of American Women Composers, Midwest, an organization that promoted music by women composers through concerts and educational programs from 1982 to 2000.
