TALLMADGE, Emily

Emily B. Tallmadge (born c. 1840) was an American composer, printer, labor songwriter, and supporter of the women's suffrage movement. Born in Dutchess County, New York, she later lived in Chicago, where she married publisher James D. Tallmadge. Although little is known about her musical training or career, her surviving compositions consist primarily of secular songs and choral works. Among them is the unaccompanied partsong Song of the Beautiful, composed to a text by her husband. Tallmadge's work reflects her participation in the musical and social culture of nineteenth-century America, including the labor and women's suffrage movements.
