TAGLE, Gabriela Vidal

Gabriela Vidal Tagle (1909–1983) was a Chilean composer whose work encompassed both classical and folkloric traditions. Her compositions include piano works as well as vocal music in traditional Chilean genres such as the tonada and cueca. Among her best-known works is the tonada Ni envidia ni caridad, with text by Manuel Lira Silva, which was recorded by the Chilean folklorist and singer Margot Loyola. Vidal Tagle’s music reflects the intersection of art music and Chilean folk traditions that characterized much of the country’s musical culture during the mid-twentieth century. Although her work was largely overlooked in standard musical histories, her compositions have been preserved and revisited through contemporary research and performance initiatives, including projects dedicated to recovering the work of Chilean women composers. She also came from a family closely associated with Chilean musical life; her brother, Eugenio Vidal Tagle, was among the early members of the influential folk ensemble Los Cuatro Huasos.
