Hild Sofie Tafjord (born January 4, 1974) is a Norwegian horn player, composer, and improviser whose work spans jazz, experimental music, free improvisation, noise, and live electronic music. Born in Langevåg, Norway, she studied at Toneheim Folk High School before continuing her education at the University of Oslo and the Norwegian Academy of Music. While a student, she co-founded the influential improvisation ensemble Spunk with Maja S. K. Ratkje, Lene Grenager, and Kristin Andersen, and has since been an active member of several experimental ensembles, including Fe-mail, Agrare, Lemur, Zeitkratzer, and numerous projects with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. Recognized for expanding the sonic possibilities of the French horn through extended techniques and electronics, Tafjord has established herself as a leading figure in contemporary experimental music. Her compositions include the solo albums KAMA and Breathing, as well as the large-scale brass ensemble works Mural I and Mural II, premiered at the Tectonics Festival in Glasgow and the Only Connect Festival in Oslo, respectively. Through her work as both a composer and performer, Tafjord has made significant contributions to contemporary improvised and electroacoustic music.
