Maria de Melo Furtado Caldeira Giraldes de Bourbon was a prominent Portuguese aristocrat, writer, and musician who became a significant figure in the nation's artistic and cultural circles.
Born in Arcos, Anadia, in the Aveiro district of Portugal, she was the daughter of Francisco Augusto Furtado de Mesquita Paiva Pinto, the 1st Count of Foz de Arouce, and Maria Joana de Bourbon Melo Giraldes de Sampaio. In 1884, she married João Filipe Osório de Meneses Pita, which elevated her to the rank of the 2nd Countess Consort of Proença-a-Velha. Together, the couple raised a large family that included at least three sons and three daughters.
Beyond her aristocratic duties, she cultivated a prolific career in the arts, frequently publishing literary works and composing musical pieces under the anagrammatic pseudonym M. Grisalde. Among her most notable artistic contributions are Ecos do Passado (Echoes of the Past), Melodias Dispersas (Scattered Melodies), Cânticos Religiosos (Religious Chants), Os Nossos Poetas (Our Poets), and As Minhas Asas (My Wings). She spent her later years in the Portuguese capital and passed away at the age of 79 in the Lisbon parish of São Sebastião da Pedreira. Detailed genealogical records of her lineage and descendants are maintained by platforms such as FamilySearch and Geneall.
