Lois Marshall was an American composer, pianist, and educator active during the mid-20th century. Marshall’s compositional output was focused predominantly on pedagogical piano literature, character miniatures, and accessible keyboard solos designed to cultivate expressive phrasing, touch, and rhythmic stability in developing intermediate pianists. In the late 1940s, her piano works were brought out in New York by The Composers Press—an influential mid-century publishing house dedicated to contemporary American composers.
Representative surviving compositions from her catalog include: "A Country Lane" (solo piano, published 1947 by The Composers Press, plate CP 266), an evocative character piece built on pastoral contours and diatonic melodic figurations; "In a Canoe" (solo piano, published 1947 by The Composers Press, plate CP 267), a descriptive lyrical study featuring rolling, undulating keyboard accompaniments that simulate water motion; "May Morning" (solo piano, The Composers Press), a bright, cantabile spring miniature; "Wind in the Pines" (also cataloged as Winds in the Pines; solo piano, The Composers Press), featuring atmospheric dynamic shading and arpeggiated keyboard gestures.
