Notes:

Jane Marshall (née Jane Anne Manton) was an influential American composer, conductor, hymnist, and music educator born on December 5, 1924, in Dallas, Texas. She completed her undergraduate studies in music at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in 1945 and later earned a Master of Music degree in choral conducting and composition from the same institution in 1968. She served for decades on the faculty of SMU’s Perkins School of Theology, teaching choral conducting and hymnody while leading clinics and workshops across the United States.

Marshall’s compositional catalog centers primarily on contemporary choral music, sacred anthems, and hymnody, recognized for its lyrical vocal lines, clear declamation, and sensitive engagement with poetic texts. Her breakout work, the choral anthem "My Eternal King" (published in 1954), established her reputation internationally and became a permanent staple of 20th-century American choral literature. Her anthem "Awake, My Heart" won the prestigious American Guild of Organists anthem competition in 1957. Marshall composed more than two hundred anthems and hymns widely anthologized in modern ecumenical and denominational hymnals, including the hymn tune and text "What Gift Can We Bring", as well as choral works such as "He Comes to Us", "Fanfare for Easter", and "A Beautiful Thing". Her compositional manuscripts and working papers are preserved in the archives of Southern Methodist University.
