MARIANE LUBI, Nee Maria Anna Lechner

Mariane Lubi was an Austrian composer and pianist active in Vienna at the turn of the 19th century. Married to the Austrian writer, poet, and civil servant Michael Lubi (1751–1807), she was part of the cultivated Viennese musical salon circles of the late Classical era. Lubi’s compositional output centered on German art songs (Lieder) and solo keyboard pieces. Her most significant published work was a collection entitled Zwölf Lieder fürs Klavier (Twelve Songs for Piano/Voice), self-published in Vienna in 1801. In musicological history, she is famous for a notable historical misattribution: her song Ammenlied ("Am hohen, hohen Thurm", set to a poem by her husband) was mistakenly attributed to Franz Schubert in the 1872 Schubert Alte Gesamtausgabe (catalogued as D. 122). Modern Schubert scholarship and comparative bibliographical research (notably by Peter Rastl) definitively restored the work to Lubi.
