MACONI, Natta

Natta Maconi (née Rosenbom) is known to have composed at least some spiritual songs, of which Vik bort, otro (“Go away, unbelief”) (s.a.) has survived to our days. Like many Finnish composers of spiritual songs, Maconi took the text of her songs from the early Swedish free church revival collection of spiritual songs Pilgrims’ Songs, which was first published in 1859. Maconi and her husband were central figures in Porvoo’s musical circles in the years 1853–1863 and were among the friends of Fredrika and Johan Ludvig Runeberg. Later, the family moved to Jyväskylä, where Natta Macon's husband Emil Maconi (1827–1895) worked as a history teacher and principal at the Lyceum, the first Finnish-language secondary school in Finland.

She had first been a student of J. L. Runeberg and later a colleague at Porvoo Upper Secondary School. Natta Maconi's parents were Lovisa Rosenbom (née von Güterbock), born in Sortavala, and Erik Johan Rosenbom, second deputy provincial secretary and district judge of Viipuri County. Natta Maconi's husband's niece Signe Maconi (1892–1968) was a composer of children's songs.
