Countess Ada de Lachau was born Ada Louise Metz in Brooklyn in 1866. After marrying into French nobility she became a successful songwriter in San Francisco. Her most known publication was a version of the Antebellum song "Li'l Liza Jane," as featured in the 1916-17 Broadway show "Come Out of the Kitchen". Although de Lachau was not the original composer of this song--its origins date at least to before the American civil war, in enslaved populations--her publication helped to popularize it as a jazz standard.
