Marie Knebelsberger came from a family of musicians in Preßnitz (now Pressnitz) and was born while her parents were on a concert tour. Her father, Leopold Knebelsberger (1814–1869), was an Austrian organist, violinist, singer, and composer. He also played the dulcimer, zither, guitar, and cornet. Her mother, Anna Knebelsberger, née Hellmich (1829–1871), was a singer and harpist and also played the zither. Marie Knebelsberger grew up in Preßnitz, where she presumably received her musical training. Her sisters, Wilhelmine (later Roth, dates of birth and death unknown) and Anna (later Lissner, dates of birth and death unknown), also received musical training.
