Dorothy M. Kahananui, a music educator, choral director, composer, musician, language authority and patron of the arts and culture of Hawai`i, as well as lecturer and assistant professor at the University of Hawaii Department of Music from 1931-1960. Following her "retirement", she embarked upon a second career as an instructor in Hawaiian language at both the University of Hawaii and Kamehameha Schools. She authored texts in both music and language and in 1970 received the David Malo Award for her contributions to Hawaiian culture. Dorothy recognized the value of music as a teaching tool during her years as an educator in elementary schools on Maui and in Honolulu. From that experience, grew her belief that choral music motivates greater learning for all children.
