JONAK-FREYENWALD, Susan

The singer, pianist, music teacher and composer Susan Jonak-Freyenwald was born on October 15, 1882 in Vienna and died on April 24, 1962 in Salzburg.

"As a singer (alto) at the opera in Reichenberg, in Salzburg, and with the Vienna Singverein (Singverein) of the Society of Friends of Music. She also worked as a pianist, organist, composer, and music teacher (voice, piano, guitar, music theory). From April 1929 to 1930, she taught at the Westphalian School of Music in Münster, and later as a language teacher. In 1938, she was persecuted and imprisoned by the Nazi regime. From 1938 to 1940, she was employed as a music and language teacher at various convent schools in Savoy, France. She returned to Vienna in June 1940 and worked at the Kastali, Metzger, and Horak institutes. She was expelled by the Nazi school authorities. Her works (especially vocal music and songs with instrumental accompaniment) were performed in various churches in Vienna, Salzburg, and Münster, and also broadcast on the radio station Rot-Weiss-Rot. She also performed her own works for voice and lute."
