JOHNSON, Liz Dilnot

Liz Dilnot Johnson is a British composer based in the Malvern Hills, known for an award-winning body of work that ranges from exquisite miniatures to expansive, multi-dimensional compositions. Originally a school teacher, she transitioned to composition in her mid-30s, completing an MA and a PhD at Birmingham Conservatoire, and subsequently lectured there for two decades (1999–2019) in composition, music and health, and community engagement. Now composing full-time, Johnson’s music is frequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM and performed globally by artists such as the Fitzwilliam String Quartet and Ex Cathedra, where she has served as composer-in-residence. Her work often tackles complex contemporary themes—such as the refugee crisis and environmental wellbeing—challenging boundaries between audience and performer to stimulate debate and connection with the natural world.
