JOHNSON, Eloise Lisle

Doris Eloise Lisle Johnson (1918–2014) was an American composer, music educator, historian, and arts advocate. Educated at Mount Union College and The Ohio State University, she began her career performing for children on Ohio radio as "The Lullaby Lady" before working as a music supervisor and training future educators at institutions including Case Western Reserve University and Kent State University. As a composer, she wrote numerous musical works for children, most notably an adaptation of Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol", which became a long-standing annual tradition for Michigan schools.

Beyond teaching and composing, Johnson was a champion for arts infrastructure and community music. As president of the St. Cecilia Music Society (1984–1994), she authored its centennial history and spearheaded a major $2 million capital campaign to restore its historic facility. Her lifelong advocacy earned her several prestigious honors, including the Michigan Governor's Arts Organization Award.
