Name: ITO, Aki (b. 1979)
Musical genre: Chamber Music, Orchestral
Country of birth: Japan
Country of location: Japan

Notes:

A Japanese composer, she pursues a concept of "slowness" by focusing on the study of a time-based system inspired by astronomy. The slowness she defines is a temporal space that shifts slowly and perpetually—a realm where multiple distinct timeframes coexist and influence one another. In this sense, time is, for her, relative and interactive, shifting according to the perspective from which it is viewed.

Following her studies at the CNSM in Paris, she has developed a personal, multidisciplinary body of work. She has collaborated on various projects with Eric-Maria Couturier, Mayu Sato Brémaud, Tuuli Lindeberg, choreographer Richard Siegal, Frédéric Bevilacqua (ISMM, IRCAM), multimedia interaction researcher Jean-Philippe Lambert, poet and author Eira Stenberg, astrophysics educator Emmanuel Rollinde, and visual artist Félicie d’Estienne d’Orves.

Her creative and research projects have received funding from the Institut Français, the Kone Foundation, the Sibelius Fund, and IRCAM. She was a resident fellow at the Casa de Velázquez in 2011.

She is currently a visiting research composer with the ISMM team at IRCAM. She values collaborating with researchers as a means to realize her musical ideas by engaging with both the possibilities and the constraints of technology.
