Louise Hofmann-Kern was born in Ödenburg, Hungary, but spent almost her entire life in Vienna. Her father was a piano teacher and ensured that his daughter received a solid musical education by selecting excellent instructors. She soon became a sought-after piano teacher herself and served for a time as a professor of piano, organ, and basso continuo at a training institute for female teachers.
In 1878, her first compositions were published, some of which were virtuosic transcriptions leaning toward salon music.
