HAMBLEN, "Suzy" Veeva Ellen Daniels

Suzy Hamblen, (Veeva Ellen Daniels Hamblen) was a conference speaker, entertainer, singer-songwriter, and she lived to be 101 years old. Born in the Oklahoma territory (before it was a state), she moved to California with her parents when she was around 14 years old. Later as a professional young woman, she took a job at KMTR (radio station) as secretary to the station’s manager. It was there she met, fell in love, and soon married Stuart Hamblen, who happened to be the very first singing cowboy on broadcast radio (1926) and just so happened to host the #1 radio program on the West Coast of the United States at that time (1931 to 1951). One of Stuart’s band members was Dave Ashenfeller, and when Stuart started dating Veeva, she would always stand just off stage to watch the whole show each night. Back then, radio shows were the #1 form of entertainment, so usually audiences filled the station’s theater where the radio programs were broadcasted from. One time during the show, Stuart turned to Dave (with a live audience and on a live broadcast) and said, “Dave, did you know your sister was visiting us today?” Of course, Dave had no idea, and said “Where is she?" Stuart pointed right at Veeva and said “there she is! Suzy Ashenfeller, come on out here and let everyone see you!” When Veeva came out, Stuart thought he’d put her on the spot and said, “Would you like to sing a song for everyone today?” At that time, he had no idea she could sing… but she could, she did, and Veeva that day became forever more known as “Suzy”. Suzy also became a part of his group from then on as well and sang right alongside Stuart on his popular radio shows.

Suzy has written and recorded a number of Gospel songs onto albums, and she has appeared on several of the Bill Gaither Homecoming Gospel videos and CDs. Throughout her lifetime, she was a noted speaker and in demand at churches and Christian conferences across the country. She also raised Peruvian Paso horses and together with Stuart, would ride them in horse shows and in the New Year’s Day Rose Parade each year in Pasadena, CA. She was the "CEO" of the family music publishing company, Hamblen Music Co. which published her songs and Stuart’s, and the company is currently run today by their grandson, Bill Lindsay. Stuart and Suzy had two daughters, Veeva Suzanne and Obee Jane (Lisa) Hamblen, seven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren at the time of her passing. She was affectionately known, along with Stuart, as "Nana and Pappy" from every child that walked thru their front door.
