Ruth Helen Gillum was an educator, composer-arranger, and accomplished pianist. She studied at the University of Kansas. In 1934, she joined the faculty at Philander Smith College and conducted the choir. In 1942, she moved to North Carolina Central College, conducting the concert choir and serving the department of music for almost 30 years. She retired in the early 1970's. Her best-known arrangements are "Roll Jordan Roll," "There's No Hiding Place," which was arranged for the Philander Smith College Choir, and "Choric Dance."
