FRENSEL-WEGENER, Emmy

Emmy Heil Frensel-Wegener was a talented Dutch violinist, pianist, poet, and composer whose highly promising musical career was tragically cut short by a debilitating illness. Born into a deeply musical family, she became a prominent figure in the early 20th-century Dutch modern music scene before health issues forced her into early retirement. She studied first at a music school in Bussum, then in England, and later graduated with a violin degree from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under Felice Togni. She also studied composition with Sem Dresden, clarinet with Willem Brohm, and Gregorian chant. Frensel-Wegener wrote numerous works for orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instruments, and voice. Her orchestral pieces received high-profile performances at the International Music Festival in Geneva under Ernest Ansermet and at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw under Pierre Monteux.
