Elvira Manuela Fernandez de Freitas was an acclaimed Portuguese composer, pianist, and one of the first female orchestral conductors in Portugal. She broke gender barriers by becoming one of the earliest prominent female orchestral conductors in Portuguese history. She won five premier national awards in musical composition and awarded the prestigious National Prize in 1971 (Prémio nacional).
