FAGERHOLM-VIRKKUNEN, Annie

Annie Fagerholm-Virkkunen was a mezzo-soprano, music educator, and composer of children's music. She was born and spent her childhood in Moscow. She and her family moved to Finland when Annie was ten years old. Fagerholm-Virkkunen attended the Helsinki State Swedish-language Girls' School, graduating in 1912. Subsequently, she studied at the Helsinki Music Institute for three years (1912–1915). She studied voice under Alexandra Ahnger and piano under the guidance of Antonie Leontjeff, Ingeborg Hymander, and Ilmari Hannikainen. She supplemented her vocal studies with private lessons from Signe Liljequist and Maikki Järnefelt-Palmgren, and possibly also at the conservatory in her native city of Moscow.
