Vivian Dahl is a self-taught as a composer. She primarily writes vocal music and sees music more as a language than as a form or structure. Among her early works from the 1970’s are songs with political messages, e.g. with revolutionary fighting poems such as lyrics or the collection "Songs Are Weapons" (1978-84). Her later songs have more lyrical lyrics of, for example. Nils Ferlin, Harald Herdal or Pablo Neruda. Among her few instrumental works is a piano trio from the year 2000.
