I-Lly Cheng is an artist whose work spans music, installations, live electronics, physical movement, and organic materials. Their practice explores the connections between human constructs and the natural world. With a background in musical instrument performance, Cheng developed an interest in body-sound interactivity, leading to the creation of sound interaction systems that move beyond traditional instrument limitations.
Cheng's compositions and interdisciplinary works have been performed internationally. Notable pieces include "Chamber Life is Floating Endlessly" (2020) for organ, sheng ensemble, and percussionists, and "The Sensation of Reality" (2016), a double concerto for sho, recorder, and live electronics. Their interdisciplinary projects include "Earth's Instruments" (2024), a site-specific performance, and "Qualia" (2022), a music theatre piece. Cheng's work aims to offer participants sensory experiences that foster awareness of energy, open-mindedness, and existence.
