Carole Chargueron is a French-born composer, sound artist, and educator, born on 8 January 1966 in Bollène, France. She began studying piano at the age of seven and later completed undergraduate and master’s degrees in musicology at the universities of Nice and Aix-en-Provence. She subsequently studied electroacoustic music with Michel Pascal at the Conservatoire de Nice. In 1992 she went to the United States to study composition at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) with Morton Subotnick, and later completed a diploma in electroacoustic composition at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon, studying with Philippe Manoury and Denis Lorrain. Muslab
Chargueron has lived in Mexico since 1998. She has been responsible for the Electroacoustic Music Workshop at the Escuela Superior de Música of INBAL and has served as coordinator of the institution’s Composition Academy. She also taught for several years in CENART’s interdisciplinary Tránsitos programme and co-organised the Sismo 04 electroacoustic music festival at UNAM. She is a member of Mexico’s Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte (SNCA).
Her creative work focuses particularly on electroacoustic and mixed music, acousmatic composition, multichannel sound, soundscape, spatialisation, and the relationship between music, space, and performance. A recurrent element in her work is the transformation of recorded environmental sounds into imagined or reconstructed sonic landscapes. Her compositions have been presented in Mexico, the United States, Europe, and Latin America, including at the Festival Internacional Cervantino, Foro Internacional de Música Nueva Manuel Enríquez, MUAC-UNAM, and other contemporary-music venues.
Among her notable works is Agnioètiomix (1999), an electroacoustic work involving multilingual voices. Fonomicroscopía del D.F. (2015) is a 22.2-channel sound installation based on field recordings from Mexico City and was presented at MUAC’s Espacio de Experimentación Sonora. Exploración Metálica (2017) combines a performer with a Baschet sound sculpture, while Flautillería for flute and electronics was commissioned through UNAM’s Resiliencia sonora programme. More recent works include Tlayofonia, premiered in 2025, and La Selva ya no suena, based on field recordings from the Costa Rican rainforest. MUAC UNAM
Her work has received support from FONCA, INBAL, and Ibermúsicas. An Ibermúsicas residency in Chile in 2016 enabled her to research the sounds of the Cerro del Bramador dunes and develop a multichannel acousmatic composition based on the phenomenon of “singing” dunes
