Stephanie Champion was an English composer, violinist, pianist and recorder player who played an important role in the revival of the recorder in Britain during the 1930s and 1940s. She was closely associated with recorder specialist Edgar Hunt and with her husband, Max Champion. Together they performed chamber music and helped establish the Society of Recorder Players in 1937; Stephanie served as its first secretary and treasurer. Aura-Edition
Before taking up the recorder seriously, Champion was already an accomplished violinist and pianist. She later composed and arranged music specifically for recorder, contributing to the development of a modern repertoire for the instrument. Her works include Fantasie for recorder and piano, published in 1939, as well as Simple Duets and Trios for Recorders, National Tunes for Recorders and First Steps in Recorder Playing. Aura-Edition
Her music is notable because it belongs to the earliest twentieth-century repertoire written specifically for the revived recorder. Fantasie has been described as one of the earliest published post-Romantic works for recorder by a woman composer.
