CATALANI, Angelica

Angelica Catalani was an Italian soprano, singing teacher and occasional composer born in Senigallia. Celebrated for the power, flexibility and exceptional range of her voice, she enjoyed an international operatic and concert career. Her surviving compositional output appears to be limited. It includes Four Italian Ariettes and a Duetto, a collection for soprano, tenor and piano published in London, containing Torna in quell’onda chiara, Io dico all’antro addio, Ma tu tremi, Sorte crudel and Se sventurata sei. She also prepared vocal arrangements and variations based on music by Paisiello, Paër and Pucitta. Her historical importance rests primarily on her achievements as a virtuoso singer rather than on an extensive compositional catalogue.
