CASTRO, Maria De Noronha

Maria Guilhermina de Noronha e Castro was a Brazilian composer active during the Second Empire. Very little is known about her life, and the dates attributed to her vary considerably between sources. Her only securely identified composition is Passagem de Humaitá, a Romantic polka in A-flat major for solo piano, published in Rio de Janeiro in 1868. Dedicated to Brazilian naval officer Arthur Silveira da Motta, the work commemorates the passage of the fortress of Humaitá during the War of the Triple Alliance. Its score is preserved in the National Library of Brazil.
