CASTELLANOS, Zoila

Zoila Castellanos Ferrer, known professionally as Tania Castellanos, was a Cuban composer and songwriter born in Regla, Havana. She began composing during the 1940s and became associated with filin, a Cuban song movement that combined the bolero tradition with jazz-influenced harmony and an intimate expressive style. Regarded as a naturally gifted melodist, she composed without relying on an instrument.
Her best-known songs include En nosotros, Recordaré tu boca, Me encontrarás and De los dos. Her early works focused primarily on love and emotional experience, while her later compositions increasingly addressed social and political themes. Her music was performed by prominent singers including Elena Burke, Omara Portuondo, Moraima Secada, Rosita Fornés and Lucho Gatica.
