CARVALHO, Nadia

Nádia Carvalho is a Portuguese composer, saxophonist and researcher whose work connects contemporary music with computer science. She studied composition at ESMAE in Porto, graduating in 2015, and continued her studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. She later completed a master’s degree in Informatics and Computing Engineering at the University of Porto.
Carvalho writes orchestral, chamber, wind-band and electroacoustic music, often combining acoustic instruments with tape, real-time electronics and computational systems. Her compositions include Tormenta for orchestra, Ritual for acousmatic electronics and dome video, Delírio for alto saxophone and tape, E vai xurdindo da morte a cibdá viva for orchestra, and Like to a Ship That Storms Urge on Its Course. Her research explores artificial intelligence, automatic music generation, computational representations of music and computer-assisted improvisation. She is also active as a saxophonist.
