HODGES, Ann Mary

Ann Mary Hodges was a British composer of the Classical period. Born Ann Mary Carr in 1763, she married the painter and explorer William Hodges in 1785 and had five children. Both she and her husband died in 1797.

Her surviving music consists of 32 English-language songs for voice and keyboard, some written for three voices. After her death, the songs were harmonised by the composer and pianist Nicolas-Joseph Hüllmandel and published in London in 1798 as Songs Composed by Mrs Hodges. The collection was issued for the financial benefit of her orphaned children and dedicated to Queen Charlotte.
