CARPENTER, Anna Hughes

Anna Hughes Carpenter was an American composer associated with the development of ragtime music in the early twentieth century. She was born in Tennessee on 26 April 1870, later lived in California and died in Los Angeles on 6 May 1957. The available sources provide little additional information about her education and professional career.

Her surviving and currently documented composition is Glad Rags, a ragtime work for solo piano published by George Jaberg in Cincinnati in 1907. The piece places Carpenter among the women who participated in the early history of American ragtime, although their contributions have frequently received less attention than those of their male contemporaries. The original score is preserved in the Charles H. Templeton Sr. Sheet Music Collection at Mississippi State University.
