CARON-LEGRIS, Albertine

Albertine Caron-Legris was a Canadian pianist, composer and music teacher, born in Louiseville, Quebec, in 1894. She began her musical education in Louiseville and Nicolet. Following her husband’s death, she moved to Montreal and studied composition at the Conservatoire national de musique, completing a Bachelor of Music degree.

Her catalogue contains nearly seventy works, mainly songs for voice and piano. Her music combines elements of Quebec folk tradition with influences from French composers such as Debussy, Ravel and Fauré. Her best-known works include La Berceuse de Donalda, written for the radio and television series Un homme et son péché, Poème pastoral, Soir d’hiver, Ceux qui s’aiment sont toujours malheureux and the collection Mes plus belles chansons. Caron-Legris died in Montreal in 1972.
